Camelroc Guest Farm 30 km MTB Ride

The ride is 30 km’s but I rode just under 11 km because of time constraints. The part of the trail I rode was very well marked.

The climb to the plateau is around 2 km and a serious climb but well worth the effort. There are some serious man made features on the trail and the views are breath taking. If you are not a cyclist I suggest you take a slow hike to the top to take in the views. This trail is an expert trail and not for the faint of heart! Two caveats if you are not an expert rider then dismount your bike for the more technical parts and you need to be a fit rider.  The trail does need a little TLC in places but this did not diminish my enjoyment of the ride.

At my age I prefer flowing trails I can and do ride technical sections but a cautious rider when riding a new trails and I suggest you do this to. On the plateau it is mostly rock beds which I find a little tedious because I prefer flowing trails. This is not meant to put you off it is a great trail and achievement to ride it.

I loved the ride and was exhausted at the top of the climb but that was soon forgotten after the 2 km decent which was a lot faster than going up just the way to finish a ride going downhill! Has with the 10 km ride this is a proper MTB Ride.

Give yourself a treat and go ride the Camelroc plateau!

On arrival after I mentioned I wanted to ride the trails I was handed a map which was very useful.

The ride is 10 km’s but I rode just over 12 km because I missed a marker. The trail is marked ok but on the eastern part of the figure 8 the markers disappeared but it is easy to work out where to go so not a problem.

The going was a bit stop and start the trail being very rocky I would say it is defiantly an expert rider trail. You need to be a fit well ridden rider to complete both the rides available. I did get off my bike and walk a lot partly due to trees, branches and large rocks on the trail and I am cautious when riding a new trail it’s an age thing! The first part of the figure 8 is more technical.

In places the trail has eroded away in to dongas, gullies, and I could not ride it with my skill level. I think the trail needs a little TLC.

I did enjoy it and was exhausted at the end it is a Proper MTB Ride just not a flow trail, second part of trail has more flow. There are some really nice sections which you will see in my video.

You will be tired at the end!

What a nice place to stay the view is stunning it takes its name from the shape of a rock which does really look like a camels head. The camping stands are great with a lappa, table, seating, electrical point and water tap. The stands are fairly level I had no problem getting a level spot for my Land Rover. The grass was nicely cut.

There is plenty of hot water and the bathroom facilities were nice and clean. See my video for just one slight problem. There are accommodation units you can rent and they look nice from the outside.

Well worth a visit.

Not a trail but the road you drive to get to the lodge. It is not a technical ride but has a 11% gradient at one point to climb but you did get to go down it on the outward ride. It is a nice ride for you to do if you have gone for a nice relaxing weekend with non cycling family & friends. I also did the short ride to the lookout point just a couple of km’s a nice ride to take your children on or even walk there.

This is my review of the Dargle Forest Lodge, KZN around 41 km’s from Howick.

You can rent a wooden cabin or camp I decided to rent a basic cabin for the night which was clean and comfortable which had an electrical socket and a kettle to make tea and coffee. I had a really good night’s sleep. The communal kitchen is well equipped and there is also a communal lounge area. The restrooms had plenty of hot water the showers nice and hot.

t is a very tranquil place and the views stunning. There are no MTB trails as such but I rode the road to the lodge and it was fun. I contacted Bridgette who explained they are in talks with the local farmers to set up possible

MTB trails. I must give a BIG SHUT OUT to Buhle who greeted me on arrival she is an asset to the lodge she explained everything thoroughly to me and smiled all the way through the process.

Would I go there to cycle not in the near future but plan to go back with friends.

A lovely ride but not technical basically fire roads with some lovely single track and one short piece with berms. To me anytime on my bicycle is great but if you just want technical riding this one is not for you, but go on do it anyway!

If you venture to the Sappi trails please let me know it would be great to hear from you.

The lady in the office was very efficient and got me on my way quickly. The trail fee is R50 per day. The office opens at 07:00am Monday to Friday and at 06:00am at the weekends.

I rode in the week and I never came across anyone on the trails but I suspect it will be busy at the weekends. A really nice ride not for beginners but if you do ride just get off your bike on the parts you are not confident on. I did not rush the ride and I recorded a time of 1 hour 30 minutes because of stopping to film and take pictures. The trail is very well marked and very easy to follow as I said in my video I did stop a couple of times to remove a tree and debris from the trail.

I managed to go through the technical stuff but nearly came off on the fire road! See video! I wonder if I should still be doing this at my age!

Cannot praise the trail enough I will be going back. If you venture to the Sappi trails please let me know it would be great to hear from you.

I decided not to take down my roof top tent every day to drive to the Sappi trails but ride my bike after all that’s what my channels is primarily about my love of cycling. The ride is around 12 km’s there and 12 km’s back. It’s a nice ride the kicker is the final climb back to the camping site! The meters climbed are around 170m.

This is my review of the Bushwillow Caravan Park which is set in a fantastically beautiful setting joining an indigenous forest. The wild life is abundant and the sounds that you are greeted with in the morning are great. The nearest town is Howick, KZN.

Each stand has an electrical point and the bathroom facilities are very clean and have plenty of hot water. There is a washing machine and tumble dryer available for guests. There is no cellular service at the site but there is excellent WiFi.

Angie & Irvine are really nice people who went out of their way to make my stay more comfortable and enjoyable.

I will be going back.

The Oribi 7.61 Km Loop starts from crossroads at end of Blesbok Loop. Scenery is open grass lands just as the Besbok ride with open views of the countryside. Not as strenuous as the previous ride. Vehicles, and cyclists, travel the route clockwise this time and the route is only one way so no oncoming traffic but still be cautious.

If you venture there to do some riding please let me know in the comments section below.

Blesbok Loop 7.94 Km from camp until crossroads going to Oribi Loop. Maximum gradient was 10% I did not get to my maximum heart rate but nearly! Scenery is open grass lands no trees but great views. Big climbs but a great descent as you can tell by my comments in my video I managed over 70 Kmph on my MTB bike and loved it. My Scott Genius would have gone faster because it is braver than me but I chickened out!

It is only a short ride but hard work but worth the effort. Cars must drive the route anti-clockwise so it is fairly safe to give it no brakes on the way down :)

I would like to go back to Golden Gate and stay a few days to go and explore to find other MTB routes.

If you venture there to do some riding please let me know in the comments section below.

Thanks for watching.

Here is my short review of the Glen Reenen Rest Camp at The Golden Gate National Park, Free State, South Africa.

On arriving at reception the welcome was not the best I have received but the person was efficient and booked me in quickly.
The camp grounds were clean and tidy. The pitch I choose had a concrete stand with an electricity supply which powered my fridge with no problems it even powered my toast for my obligatory toast and marmite for breakfast! Please see my marmite Incident video.  The bathroom facilities were clean and had plenty’s of hot water to shower and do my dish washing.  There is a shop but I could not see bread but had snacks and cold drinks. The setting is beautiful as you can see from this video. It was a little noisy at night because the R712 road passes within 50 meters of the camp grounds but I did manage to sleep ok.

I stayed one night completing  the two short cycle rides and the Mushroom Rock trail. The suggested time to complete the hike is 45 minutes.

Will I go back again, yes.

Thanks for watching,

Route & Places to Ride – Cabin Farm Stall, Clocolan, Free State, S.A.

Hi Everyone,

This is my first video of Routes & Places to Ride. I do this road ride regularly to The Cabin near Clocolan it’s a round trip on the R26 of just over 60 km’s from my house with a total ascent 540 metres. There is a gravel road route the R703 to The Cabin which I ride on my mountain bike. I rode my Diverge gravel bike in this video. If you ride this route from Ladybrand the round trip would be just over 66 Km’s. The road has an emergency lane all the way from Ladybrand to Clocolan but be cautious because cars do drive in it! The traffic on this route is not normal busy.  I have ridden this route on one occasion and the head wind was brutal.

It is a nice ride because there is a really good cup of coffee waiting for you at The Cabin.
